Welcome, everyone. This is your annual HazCom training, and if you've never had it before, welcome aboard. This is your first one. This is a new version you can do from the office or from home, and yes, you're paid while you do it, because it's a required training. And it's required because it's important.
No a memorizar, sino a entender.
OSHA frames this as the right to understand. Not to memorize, but to understand. There's a textbook case: a xylene spill in a hospital where a worker couldn't find the spill section of the SDS during a real spill, and twelve employees wound up in the E-R. The upside is it was a hospital, so they didn't have far to go. The downside is twelve people got hurt. That's what this training prevents. HazCom is consistently one of the top five OSHA citations, and it comes down to things like missing labels, gaps in the SDS, or no training records.
A complete HazCom program has five pieces, and if any one is missing, the program doesn't work. We have all five. Here's where they live at Analyze Concepts. The written program is in a binder in the office. The SDS library is in a binder out in the shop, and it's also on SharePoint. The chemical master inventory is in those same two places, with an appendix added any time we bring on a new chemical. Secondary container labels are on every spray bottle and every bucket of solution. And remember the sixty-second rule: if you can't find the safety information you need in sixty seconds, that's a problem. You need to tell me. You can reach me any time, day or night. If it's two a-m on an on-call job and you have a question about a chemical, call me. I'm a light sleeper.
Here's our chemical lineup. It's a long list, and chances are you're not working with all of these, certainly not daily. But the information is here for when you are. Two families do most of the work. If you've done a blood cleanup, you know the Suprox family: that's peroxide, and it's great for bubbling blood up off a surface, with a disinfectant quality too. The other one is our quats. Quaternary ammonium disinfectants, like QT Plus. Quats do a lot of our disinfecting, and they're effective, but don't let that fool you: they're skin and eye irritants, and they're respiratory sensitizers, which means with repeated exposure, or in a tight, poorly-ventilated space, they can irritate your airway and even trigger asthma-type symptoms. That's exactly why QT Plus calls for a mask in an enclosed space. We'll get to that under PPE. Now, the first four on the list carry a Danger signal word, and that's to be taken seriously. Skin irritation running from category one to category two. That means you don't want this on bare skin. You don't just grab the bottle and start spraying; you glove up with nitrile first. Most of these are eye irritants too, so we wear safety glasses on almost every job. And when the work goes vertical and drips can come down at you, a splash shield is the better defense. You don't need to memorize every one. Just understand that each of these poses an irritation risk.
Welcome to labels and SDS. The two information tools you'll use every shift: the GHS label on the container, and the SDS in the binder. Every GHS label has six required elements. If a container shows up at the shop without all six, it does not go onto a truck until it's properly labeled. No exceptions.
Estos son los nueve pictogramas GHS. Los símbolos de rombo rojo. Explosivo, la bomba que explota: puede detonar. Inflamable. Gas a presión.
These are the nine GHS pictograms. The red-diamond symbols. Explosive, the exploding bomb: it can detonate. Flammable. That one's just fire. Oxidizer, the flame over a circle: it feeds a fire and makes it bigger, fast. Gas under pressure. The gas cylinder, even if it looks a bit like a cricket bat. Corrosive. Your acids and strong alkalines; it burns skin, eyes, and metal. Acute toxicity. The classic skull and crossbones; it can poison you quickly. The exclamation mark, for the less-severe irritation hazards. Health hazard. The figure with a burst through the chest; longer-term harm, like a carcinogen or a respiratory sensitizer. And the ninth, the environment pictogram. A dead tree and a fish. Toxic to aquatic life. You'll see it under GHS and DOT, though OSHA doesn't require it on our HazCom labels.
We require a label on every secondary container. We have a mixing station, so this matters even more. Make sure you're applying the right label to the chemical you're actually filling the bottle with, and make sure it's affixed properly and legible. If something's wrong with the label, it's no good. We get another one, or we figure out another solution. You can use a Sharpie on tape in a pinch, but if you do, at the very minimum it needs the product name, the primary hazard, and your best rendition of the pictogram, or an HMIS rating.
There are sixteen standardized sections in a Safety Data Sheet. Three of them are the ones you need to reach in an emergency. Section four is first aid. What to do if you're splashed, if you swallow some, or if you breathe it. Section six is spill cleanup. And this one's essential, because some chemicals react with others, and if you get that wrong you can make things a lot worse. Section eight is exposure controls and PPE. What you need to work with it, or to clean it up.
This is where the rubber meets the road. You're taking the chemical to the job site. How do you detect a release? Check visually: are there puddles? Is there a sheen, a residue, fogging where it shouldn't be? Is there a smell? But don't put your nose up to it and sniff. It should be in the air around you, and if it is, do not get closer. And if you smell a rotten-egg smell, get out of there: that's hydrogen sulfide, it's an explosion hazard, and it's what they add to natural gas as a warning. If you're on the side of the company that does this work, read your H-2-S and V-O-C meters. Volatile organic compounds. And document what you read.
Storage rules. When you're done and bringing something back, the simplest way to store it is to put it back where you found it. And if you don't remember, ask. Most of our products come out of the mixing system in concentrate and are all stored together, so you won't have day-to-day interaction with that. The Apple Meth Remover is stored entirely separately, in its own room. Storage incompatibility kills people every year. The classic is bleach and ammonia, which together make a toxic gas, so do not store them together. Combustibles go in the combustible safe; if you don't know where it is, ask your supervisor. Oxidizers go on their own shelf. And once the chemical is on your truck, store it upright, and make sure it's not bouncing around. We love milk crates for this. They keep things corralled and vertical, which is how we like it.
Read the label every time. Even on something you've used time and time again. You never know when a detail will jump out, or maybe you're using the chemical in a different context, or another chemical's in play and it occurs to you the two might mix and cause a problem. So read the labels. Always think about what you're doing, and slow down. Match your PPE to what's required. If a supervisor hands you a new chemical, they should tell you how to protect yourself from it. And not just PPE; if it needs an engineered control, that's on the supervisor to set up. Labeled secondary containers only. No mystery chemicals. We don't eat, drink, or smoke around chemicals. That should be obvious. And wash your hands before you eat, smoke, or touch your face, even if you had gloves on. If you don't have running water, use hand sanitizer.
No decantamos concentrado a mano.
There's a baseline level of protection we always use with chemicals: nitrile gloves, plus a splash guard or safety goggles. If you're applying a chemical with those on, you'll be okay with most of what we use. We don't decant concentrate by hand. That's automated, so you can ignore that step. QT Plus in an enclosed space: you want a KN95 or N95 mask. Thermal fogging with poor ventilation: an N95, possibly up to a respirator. And if it's a respirator, you go through the entire respiratory program, you don't just grab one and use it. Apple Meth Remover is a wet-wipe solution, so nitrile gloves, safety glasses, and I'd highly recommend a splash shield.
If there's a spill on the job and it's small, and we have the PPE and supplies on hand, and there's no I-D-L-H risk, we can clean it up. That's an incidental spill. I-D-L-H means Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health. But if it's an emergency. A large or unknown spill, an immediate danger to life or health, a fire or explosion risk. You stop, evacuate, and call nine-one-one. From that point forward it's a HAZWOPER job, which means specialized crews come in, whether or not they're ours. You stop, you evacuate, you call nine-one-one. And that's the end of your concern. Just get away from it.
Y supervisores, ustedes me reportan esas exposiciones a mí.
If you're exposed, here are the first-aid fundamentals. Skin contact: flush with water for fifteen minutes. Eyes: flush for fifteen to thirty minutes, and remove your contacts. We have a big green mobile eye-wash station that's maintained regularly. It's gravity-fed, so even if the building water is shut off, it still works. If you inhaled something you shouldn't have, move to fresh air and monitor for symptoms. If you swallowed something, we immediately call Poison Control at one, eight hundred, two two two, one two two two. And do not induce vomiting unless the SDS says so. Report every exposure, every time, to your supervisor. And supervisors, you report those exposures to me.
If there are other contractors on the scene, the hazard information needs to be shared. We coordinate with whoever we're working with, especially if a confined space is involved. You have the right to request an SDS from any contractor on site, and if we bring chemicals to a site, we bring the SDS sheets with us. And yes. It's fair to wait to start work until they bring us an SDS, or until I can confirm one and get it to you in the field. Now, transportation: are your chemicals roadworthy? A tipped jug in the back of your truck is a very bad day. Strap it down, double-check the seals, keep compatible products only. Bleach and ammonia stay apart. And know where your spill kit lives.
Waste disposal is a little involved here at Analyze Concepts. Those of you who've been around a while know this. Chemical waste has to be segregated from biohazard and from regular trash. How is that done? If you've been to the Johnson Creek shop, you know there's a system. The short video coming up next walks you through where everything lives, where it needs to go, and the steps to get rid of it safely.
Video gate, no narration.
This part is new. On camp cleanups you'll find household hazardous waste. Cleaning chemicals in bottles and buckets, propane and other gas canisters, batteries, and paint. Here's our rule: all of it gets segregated by type and stored upright and stabilized, just like the chemicals on your truck. Nothing loose, nothing tipping, nothing mixed. Never crush, puncture, or compact any of it. Gas canisters stay upright and away from heat and any ignition source. A punctured cylinder in a truck is an explosion. Batteries, especially the lithium ones from vapes, power banks, and tools, can spark a fire if the terminals touch or if they're damaged; keep them from touching metal or each other, and set a swollen or damaged battery aside by itself. Oil-based paints and solvents are flammable, so keep them sealed and upright. Assume any unlabeled or unknown container is hazardous. And if you suspect drug-lab chemicals, you stop. That's the same rule as an unknown spill: don't handle it, and call it in. For where each of these actually goes, check Metro Central's online listings for what's accepted. That's at oregonmetro dot gov. If you don't know, don't guess: seek guidance, or bring the material to our Johnson Creek facility, where we have a designated transfer area.
When do you take this again? When we add a new chemical. You'll learn about that specific chemical. When there's a new process or task, even a familiar chemical used in a new way. After a spill or a near-miss. Say someone had a respiratory symptom after using something. That's when we step back and look at what happened. When a regulation changes. And every year, as your annual refresher.
When you deal with chemicals, you have rights and responsibilities. Your rights: to know what you're working with; to access the Safety Data Sheet during your shift. Even without a physical copy, I can send one to your lead's phone; and to refuse an unlabeled or unknown chemical, and I really hope you would, because that's dangerous stuff. Your responsibilities: follow the PPE and handling rules. Your nitrile gloves, your goggles; ask questions if you don't know; and report any exposure or any labeling violation. If a bottle's been in your truck a while and the label's scratched off, it's time for a new bottle. Report it, and we'll take care of it.
Here are the takeaways. One: read the label, please. Two: know where the SDS is. Three: match the PPE to the SDS. Four: label every secondary container. It's required, and do not use unlabeled chemicals. Five: report every exposure. And six, the biggest of all: ask if you don't know. You are your best advocate. My contact information is on this screen. Screenshot it. I'm available around the clock, so call or email whenever you have a question. Don't just pretend you don't have one. I have the answers you need, and zero issue getting them to you. Thank you so much, and stay safe out there.
